The best AI todo apps for goal tracking, honestly compared
Disclosure before anything else: Taskelo, first on this list, is my app. I'm not going to pretend to be a neutral review site, so instead I'll do the thing review sites won't: tell you exactly which of these apps is the better pick for which person, including when it isn't mine. Prices are what I verified in August 2026; check before you buy.
What "AI + goal tracking" should mean, since every app now claims both: the AI knows your goals exist. An assistant that can break a task into subtasks but has no idea you're training for a marathon is autocomplete with better marketing. The bar is an assistant that references your long-term progress when it helps you plan today.
The list
| App | Price (Aug 2026) | AI depth | Goal support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taskelo | $8/mo, workspace free | assistant with full workspace context | goals → milestones → tasks, AI-referenced |
| Todoist | Pro $5/mo annual | per-task actions, voice capture | projects, no native goal layer |
| Motion | $19/mo annual | auto-scheduling engine | projects and workloads, team-oriented |
| Sunsama | $20/mo annual | deliberately manual, no auto-AI | weekly planning ritual |
| Things 3 | ~$80 one-time | none | areas and projects, Apple-only |
Taskelo is the only one on the list where goals are a first-class layer the AI actually reads. Each goal breaks into milestones with their own checklists, Elo (the built-in assistant) references your progress when you ask it to plan, and the daily brief nudges a neglected goal each morning. Single-player only, web only. If that's disqualifying, read on.
Todoist is the safe all-rounder: the best mobile apps here, a huge integration ecosystem, and cheap. Its AI operates one task at a time and there's no real goal layer, which is the trade. I compared the two properly in the Todoist post.
Motion is the pick if you want AI to take over scheduling: it places tasks on your calendar and reshuffles them itself, and teams get workload balancing. It's the most expensive path here and the most polarizing; my Motion comparison gets into why.
Sunsama is the pick if what you need is a planning habit. Its guided morning and shutdown rituals are the product, and its weekly planning keeps goals near your day. It's deliberately manual: you do the planning yourself, which is either the feature or the dealbreaker. The Sunsama post covers the trade.
Things 3 is the pick if you're all-Apple and want zero AI, ever. One-time purchase, best-in-class polish, and the Areas structure holds long-term projects fine if you review it yourself. More in the Things 3 post.
The honest summary
Teams: Motion. Habit-builders: Sunsama. Mobile-first and integration-heavy: Todoist. Apple purists who hate subscriptions: Things 3. And if the sentence "my todo app's AI should know what I'm working toward" is why you searched, that's the exact sentence Taskelo was built from: taskelo.com, magic-link sign-in, assistant free for 14 days with no card, then $8/month with the workspace free regardless.
